How will Oregon’s new Aussie punter figure into the team’s 2018 plans?

This past Sunday not only saw Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu and Josh Delgado make their individual pledges to join Oregon’s 2019 recruiting class, but it also included the addition of a player who will enroll this summer and be eligible for the upcoming 2018 season.

That player is Tom Snee.

Who is Tom Snee?

Well, for one, he’s a punter. More specifically, he’s a 6’3″, 210-pound punter from Australia, and a player the Ducks hope can impact special teams in a way that other Aussie punters have at the collegiate level, like current Utah punter and 2016 Ray Guy Award winner Mitch Wishnowsky, or former LSU punter Brad Wing.

In the case of Wing, if Snee is able to duplicate exploits such as receiving a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for taunting or getting a shout out from Nicki Minaj in a song, then he will have done his part to leave an indelible – or perhaps infamous – mark on the hearts of Duck fans everywhere.

Jokes aside though, is it reasonable to think that Snee could factor into the team’s punting plans with sophomore and last season’s starter Adam Stack set to return?

The answer is yes.

While it’s safe to expect some level of improvement from Stack after an underwhelming true freshman campaign that saw him rank 10th in the conference with an average of 38.4 yards per punt, the opportunity is there for Snee to stake his claim to full-time punting duties. Particularly with Stack expected to be the Ducks’ full-time placekicker taking over for Aidan Schneider, who, from a statistical standpoint, exits Eugene as one of the best kickers in school history.

Along with Stack, Snee will also have to compete with redshirt junior walk-on Blake Maimone for the job. However, with Oregon special teams coordinator Bobby Williams extending Snee (who will arrive on campus as a true freshman) a full-ride scholarship, it’s fairly safe to assume that this will be a Stack-Snee battle once fall camp kicks-off in August.
