What are the Ducks getting in Mycah Pittman?

Recruiting / Monday, July 23rd, 2018

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and right now, the Oregon Ducks are a raging recruiting inferno under head coach Mario Cristobal.

Monday saw the Ducks add yet another highly-touted prospect to their 2019 recruiting class, as Calabasas (Calif.) four-star wide receiver Mycah Pittman pledged his verbal commit to Oregon. Pittman’s pledge comes only hours after Lanett (Ala.) four-star safety Trikweze Bridges announced his verbal commitment to the Ducks earlier in the day.

With 31 offers to his name and ranked as the nation’s 11th-best receiver per 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Pittman selected the Ducks over the Florida Gators; a program that was once regarded as the overwhelming favorite prior to an unofficial visit he took to Eugene in May. Following that visit, the Ducks picked up major momentum and were able to close on Pittman in relatively short order.

With the commitment, Pittman joins what is quickly becoming a star-studded class of receivers featuring three-star JR WatersĀ and four-starsĀ Josh Delgado andĀ Lance Wilhoite. He is the 16th player to verbally commitment to the Ducks’ 2019 class.

Following his commitment, the Ducks now claim the nation’sĀ 4th-ranked recruiting class per 247Sports’ Composite Team Rankings, trailing only Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma.

Below we take a closer look at Pittmanā€™s game, examining his weaknesses and strengths, as well as projecting how he may make an impact for the Ducks when he ultimately arrives on campus.

Notable weaknesses:

  • Lacks elite height:Ā Standing 5-foot-11, Pittman does not possess elite height in order to establish himself as a consistent jump ball or redzone fade threat. When matched up against larger corners, Pittman’s impact can be neutralized.
  • Can border on being over-aggressive:Ā Don’t get it twisted, Pittman’s physicality is one of his greatest assets. However, he can toe the line at times when it comes to being over-aggressive, particularly as a blocker. If you’re a coach, it’s a good problem to have in a wide receiver, but Pittman will need to stay situationally aware in order to avoid letting that mentality get the best of him.

Notable strengths:

  • Very good speed:Ā On tape, Pittman exhibits very good speed and shows routine ability to get separation from defenders while running routes and once the ball is in his hands. He’s a bonafide big-play threat.
  • Technically sound:Ā Pittman demonstrates soft hands and is more often than not catching the ball cleanly. He’s a fundamentally sound player who also runs quality routes, showing no wasted or sloppy movements coming in and out of his breaks. Has been well coached.
  • Excellent body control:Ā Pittman isn’t a guy with the biggest, most imposing frame, but that doesn’t prevent him from being an effective downfield threat. He showcases excellent body control when leaping to make catches in defender-saturated areas. He attacks the ball with confidence in the air and is unafraid to sacrifice his body in order to come up with the catch. He’s a rough and tumble athlete who catches the ball well through contact.
  • Very physical:Ā Rare is the occasion when Pittman will find himself completely out-‘physicalled’ by an opponent. He has a competitive spirit that shines through on film and he’ll never shy away from contact, with or without the ball in his hands. A willing and enthusiastic blocker.

Overall outlook:

Mycah Pittman reminds me of a more explosive, more versatile Johnny Johnson. Both players play with a certain measure of physicality and reckless abandon that make them exciting players to watch, though Pittman shows far more natural ability as a game-breaking talent. The slot might be where Pittman is most effective, but similar to Johnson, his skill set is such where he can be just as impactful lining up as an outside receiver or even motioning out of the backfield pre-snap. The son of former NFL running back Michael Pittman, Mycah is a well-rounded player who shows advanced football IQ. Of the receivers Oregon has landed a verbal commitment from during the 2019 cycle, he may be best and most complete of the bunch. He should be an excellent candidate for early and consistent playing time as a true freshman.
