How will Camden Lewis figure into Oregon’s 2019 plans?

Ask any diehard Duck fan and they’ll be quick to tell you just how dicey the kicking situation has been at Oregon over the past several years, with the exception of the period of time that was marked by Aidan Schneider, who left Oregon as one of the most accurate kickers in school history.

In 2018, in year one post-Schneider, however, the Ducks saw a return to the precariousness that has underscored the place kicking situation in Eugene in recent memory.

This season, in his first full season as Oregon’s primary field goal kicker, sophomore Adam Stack was barely better than a coin flip when the Ducks would make the decision to go for three. Having battled what head coach Mario Cristobal labeled as “tired leg” for the first half of the season, Stack looked like a player who was definitively limited in terms of his field goal range.

Of his 10 field goal attempts during the regular season, Stack was only successful converting six of those tries, with his longest made field goal coming from 39 yards out. On tries of 40 yards or more, Stack was 0-for-2.

Thus, in an effort to provide Stack with some game competition and to perhaps even unseat the once highly-touted prep kicker, the Ducks gained a verbal commitment from Cornelius (N.C.) William Amos Hough three-star prospect Camden Lewis on Saturday.

Formerly a verbal commit to Minnesota, Lewis made his pledge to Oregon after taking his official visit to Eugene this weekend. Ranked as the nation’s fourth best kicker per 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Lewis exhibits the range and accuracy of a player who could immediately contend for playing time as a freshman both as the Ducks’ full-time field goal kicker and/or full-time kicker on kickoffs.

According to stats provided by MaxPreps, Lewis converted on 8-of-16 field goal attempts this past season and was 13-of-27 for high school career. His career long was 52 yards.
