Who to know in 2020: An early look at Oregon’s top recruiting targets on offense

Recruiting / Wednesday, February 20th, 2019

Only now is the dust beginning to settle on Oregon’s red-letter 2019 recruiting class; a monumental recruiting haul on both offense and defense that ultimately landed the Ducks in the top ten of the national recruiting rankings for the first time in school history.

Yet, in spite of the incredible and unprecedented work from head coach Mario Cristobal and his crack staff of elite-level recruiters in 2019, the end of one recruiting cycle only serves to mark the beginning of the next recruiting chapter. Well before the ink had dried on the 2019 class, Cristobal and company had already gotten a jump on the Class of 2020, as the Oregon coaching staff has already offered well over 200 recruits in the 2020 class.

Below, WFOD takes a look at the biggest single target at each position on offense, while also including a few key names to keep tabs on.

Quarterback

The Big Fish: (5*) DJ Uiagalelei – 6’4″, 240 lbs. – Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco

It could be argued that there’s no recruit more important to Oregon’s 2020 recruiting class than five-star signal-caller DJ Uiagalelei. Standing 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, Uiagalelei is not only the nation’s top quarterback prospect, but a fair case could be made that he’s the nation’s top overall prospect. Born with a howitzer attached to his shoulder, Uiagalelei’s exceptional arm talent is perhaps his most notable physical quality, though his overall athleticism and build is something to behold. Regarded as a top-level baseball prospect to boot, Uiagalelei may be forced to choose between gridiron and the diamond down the road, but for now, football appears to be where his future is brightest. With Justin Herbert set to graduate at the end of the 2019 season, the Ducks could sell “DJ U” on the opportunity to start right away, but the battle for his signature will be just that. Despite the distance from home, Clemson is believed to be Oregon’s stiffest competition for Uiagalelei, and may even be the early favorite at this time.

Other names to know:

(4*) Jay Butterfield – 6’6″, 180 lbs. – Brentwood (Calif.) Liberty
(4*) TJ Finley – 6’6″, 233 lbs. – Ponchatoula (La.) – **LSU VERBAL COMMIT**

Running Back

The Big Fish: (5*) Kendall Milton – 6’1″, 211 lbs. – Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan

Aside from an infusion of talent at wide receiver, the one thing that’s been noticeably absent from Oregon’s power-oriented offense under Mario Cristobal is a running back who positively reflects this desired philosophical approach. In 2020, the Ducks hope they are able to fill that void with five-star running back Kendall Milton. With 40 offers from blue blood programs from coast-to-coast, Milton would be a home run signee for Oregon running backs coach Jim Mastro, who demonstrated his celebrated recruiting prowess in the state of California during the 2019 cycle by landing two of the most talented running backs in the state in four-star prospect Sean Dollars and three-star prospect Jayvaun Wilson. Milton is far from just a bruising back, however. Despite his size, Milton possesses quick feet and an explosive open field burst, making him a nightmare tackling dummy for opposing defenders. Oregon’s current stable of running backs offers plenty of optimism moving forward, but Milton’s presence on the roster would elevate that group to a whole new level within the conference.

Other names to know:

(4*) Sam Adams II – 6’2″, 200 lbs. – Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic
(3*) Chris Street – 5’8″, 190 lbs. – San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) JSerra Catholic
(4*) Jalen Berger – 6’0″, 187 lbs. – Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep
(4*) Tirek Murphy – 6’0″, 220 lbs. – Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ The King Regional

Wide Receiver

The Big Fish: (5*) Johnny Wilson – 6’6″, 220 lbs. – Calabasas (Calif.)

In both literal and figurative terms, Johnny Wilson is the biggest fish that the Ducks will attempt to catch at wide receiver during the 2020 recruiting cycle. Even in spite of the impressive recruiting haul Oregon pulled off at the position during the 2019 cycle (which included Wilson’s high teammate, Mycah Pittman), the roster is still in need of game-changing talent. Wilson fits that bill, and then some. At 6-foot-6, Wilson towers over opposing defenders, though he couples his tremendous size advantage with exceptional athleticism, as his game reminds us of Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro wide receiver Mike Evans. A commitment from Wilson would give the Ducks a bonafide weapon out wide that the program hasn’t really seen, and he would likely be an immediate contender for playing time the moment he stepped foot on campus. Washington, UCLA, Texas, Ohio State, and Oregon comprise Wilson’s top five, though no clear leader has emerged.

Other names to know:

(4*) Jalen McMillan – 6’2″, 181 lbs. – Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial
(4*) Brenden Rice – 6’3″, 195 lbs. – Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton
(4*) Elijhah Badger – 6’1″, 185 lbs. – Folsom (Calif.)
(3*) Silas Starr – 6’2″, 187 lbs. – Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic
(4*) LV Bunkley-Shelton – 6’0″, 180 lbs. – Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra

Tight End

The Big Fish: (5*) Darnell Washington – 6’8″, 238 lbs. – Las Vegas (Nev.) Desert Pines

Oregon already has a commitment from three-star prospect Seth Figgins at tight end, but if there’s anything that Mario Cristobal has proven early in his tenure as head coach at Oregon, it’s that he has an affinity for accumulating depth at the position. In five-star talent Darnell Washington, Cristobal hopes to add an athletic two-way prospect who could just as easily excel as a defensive end as he could at tight end. At 6-foot-8, Washington combines a level of size and athleticism you simply cannot teach. However, he is raw as a prospect and could be a player who really benefits from a redshirt season despite his lofty five-star rating. With over 30 offers to his name, Washington has no shortage of options to consider as enters the final season of his high school career.

Other names to know:

(4*) D.J. Rogers – 6’3″, 230 lbs. – Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic

Offensive Line

The Big Fish: (4*) OG Myles Murao – 6’3″, 270 lbs. – Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

A season-ending ankle injury in October may have curtailed Myles Murao’s junior season, but it won’t prevent the rising senior from being one of the most highly coveted offensive linemen on the West Coast during the 2020 cycle. Despite his relative youth, Murao earned an early reputation as one of the top offensive linemen on a stacked Mater Dei team that perennially ranks among the nation’s best. Projected to play guard when he reaches college, Murao’s elite athleticism and footwork is what sets him apart from other top prospects at the position around the country. If he can exhibit those same skills coming off a significant injury, he should remain as one of the nation’s most highly sought after o-line prospects. USC, UCLA, and Washington are all schools in the mix for Murao early in his recruitment.

Other names to know:

(4*) OT Tosh Baker – 6’8″, 275 lbs. – Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle
(4*) OT Jake Wray – 6’5″, 290 lbs. – Marietta (Ga.)
(4*) OG Geirean Hatchett – 6’5″, 275 lbs. – Ferndale (Wash.)
(3*) C Drake Metcalf – 6’2″, 270 lbs. – Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco

  1. Love reading your posts. Some might of these recruits might be possible, but not if Cristobal is not able to get his team to produce on the offensive side of the ball this season. 2018 was pathetic, and hard to watch for Duck fans.
