What are the Ducks getting in Kris Hutson?

Recruiting / Saturday, April 20th, 2019

After signing 12 recruits with direct ties to Southern California during the 2019 recruiting cycle, the Ducks appear well on their way to duplicating that feat in 2020 if their work through the month of April is any harbinger of things to come.

On heels of Jaden Navarrette’s commitment on Friday, along with Seth Figgins’ verbal commit back in October, Oregon added a third commitment from a SoCal native on Saturday, as Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco four-star wide receiver Kris Hutson made the call for the Ducks.

Formerly a verbal pledge to USC, Hutson backed off his commitment to the Trojans last October in order to re-evaluate his options. Ranked as the nation’s 38th-best receiver per 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Hutson is the first wideout to commit to the Ducks in the 2020 class.

Below we take a closer look at Hutson’s game, examining his weaknesses and strengths, as well as projecting how he may make an impact for the Ducks when he ultimately arrives on campus.

Notable weaknesses:

  • Slender build: At 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, Hutson is a slender athlete who could be particularly susceptible to injury if he struggles to add bulk to his frame. Finding ways to avoid punishing hits from defenders, especially early in his career, will be a skill that serves him well in the long run.
  • Lackluster strength: Walking hand-in-hand with Hutson’s diminutive stature is the fact that he lacks notable strength. Increasing his strength will not only keep him healthy over the course of a season, but also make him a more well-rounded receiver in terms of blocking and wriggling free of would-be tacklers.

Notable strengths:

  • Very good speed, quickness: Hutson excels at gaining separation from defenders thanks in part to his outstanding speed and quickness. He’s a bonafide big play threat in the short, intermediate, and deep passing game.
  • Quality route runner: The other main component to Hutson’s success is his advanced skills as a route runner. This is often a quality that eludes most young receivers, but not Hutson. Combined with quick feet, the SoCal product also seems to take pride in being a pass catching technician.
  • Threat in the return game: In addition to his pass catching prowess, Hutson is also a dynamic weapon in both the punt and kickoff return game. His knack for finding creases and running to daylight makes him one of the better multi-purpose weapons on the West Coast in the 2020 class.

Overall outlook:

St. John Bosco has emerged as a true pipeline for future Oregon talent the last couple recruiting cycles, and that looks to continue with the verbal commitment of wide receiver Kris Hutson. Though not overly physical, Hutson is an exciting athlete who is fundamentally sound and who reminds us of fellow St. John Bosco product and current Oregon receiver Josh Delgado. Like Delgado, Hutson figures to make his impact offensively out of the slot, but don’t be surprised to see him also emerge as a weapon in the return game. All in all, Hutson’s speed and elusiveness provides the Ducks with an added element of explosiveness – something that’s been missing from this team the last few seasons.
